Join us for a screening of the film Iron Jawed Angels, presented by Cincinnati World Cinema and the League of Women Voters of the Cincinnati Area on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 3 pm. at 7 p.m. at the Showboat Majestic, Showboat Majestic, 435 E Mehring Way, Cincinnati, OH 45202.
We hope you will join us for this important film, and we ask that you invite the grandmothers, mothers and daughters in your circle; and alert educators, students, and the groups to which you belong.
Unlike social issue documentaries filled with talking heads and dizzying statistics, Iron Jawed Angels plots a different course, one that captures heart and intellect while expanding the boundaries of democracy and justice.
Using dramatic narrative to relate a true story, director Katja von Garnier and writer Jennifer Friedes pull us into American history as it happened. We become invested in believable, everyday characters as they plot and plan, protest and picket, survive imprisonment and torture, all to realize a crucial right for American women.
Magically, history comes alive as we follow two tenacious, smart young women (millennials of their era) craft the strategy and tactics that result in American women gaining the right to vote.
These two women were Alice Paul and Lucy Burns. Back then it took a team, as it does now, on screen, perfectly portrayed by Hilary Swank, Jennifer O'Connor, Anjelica Huston, Julia Ormond and Vera Farmiga, with support from an excellent ensemble cast.
The impact of the National Woman's Party formed by Paul and Burns is a little known story, but something all Americans need to understand and appreciate, especially the women of today who comprise a majority of the electorate.
We hope you and your group can attend, but by all means urge others to be with us on Saturday, September 24 on the Showboat Majestic. Screenings are at 3:00 and 7:00, each followed by facilitated audience discussion.
